Firefighters responded to a working structure fire on S. Hickory Leaf Drive Thursday night. As they arrived firefighters could see smoke rising into the air.

Pulse point showed that the firefighters were dispatched around 6:01 p.m., and spent at least 4 hours and 21 minutes on the scene.

Bloomington Fire Department  Capt. Max Litwin said the house was packed full of items and firefighters had difficulty gaining access to the interior of the structure in a way that would quicken extinguishing the blaze.

Litwin said nearly every entrance was blocked with large piles of trash and debris, and then the roof began to collapse from the fire, which made it necessary to fight the fire from a defensive position. However, hotspots inside the house kept burning since access was difficult.

The house was unoccupied when it caught fire, but a resident of the home watched from across the street as neighbors stopped to speak with him, and express concern. The resident said he lost everything in the fire. He said he’ll have to start over from nothing. He wasn’t home when the fire began.

As firefighters began to leave the area, the man sat in a car and watched.

Firefighters from the Bloomington Fire Department, Van Buren Fire Department and other departments within Monroe County responded to the fire. Bloomington’s Truck 1 was at the scene and the ladder was extended over the home, and water poured onto the house from above.
