IOWA (KTIV) - Iowa's State Epidemiologist Dr. Caitlin Pedati says state health officials are keeping a close eye on the COVID-19 situation in neighboring states like South Dakota and Minnesota.
According to Dr. Pedati, the exact source of the outbreak in Iowa is unclear, so health leaders are focusing their attention on community spread.
Dr. Pedati said they are seeing numbers in all demographics - so there's not a specific group of people to point to with the increase.
Which makes it difficult to pinpoint one exact reason why there is a spike in northwest Iowa.
"Just like any other illness we know that diseases don't always understand or adhere to borders and just like any other public health issue we work closely with our partners in other states to try and understand what they are seeing trends, and impacts and what might be going on," said Dr. Pedati.
Dr. Pedati says the goal is to limit the spread of the virus, especially to the vulnerable population - like the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
