Don't Wait—Register to Vote This Week. It's Easy - BU Today

It’s less than six weeks until the 2020 presidential election, and if you haven’t yet registered to vote, time is running out.

This week is VoteBIG week at Boston University, and virtual events are happening all week to help students register and give them more information about the process.

VoteBIG” (BIG=Boston Intercollegiate Government) is, as its name suggests, an intercollegiate campaign whose aim is to encourage students in the Greater Boston area to register to vote and to make their vote count. An inter-university competition is underway to see which school can register the most students, and BU Student Government is running a competition among the University’s schools and colleges, too.

Susan Lee (GRS’02), a College of General Studies master lecturer in social sciences and associate chair, who organized the BU voter registration drive, says voting is our duty as citizens and a privilege. Despite this, though, the number of young people who vote remains low—the 18-to-24 age group had the lowest turnout among voters in the 2016 presidential election, according to census data

“In many countries they don’t have the right to vote,” Lee says. “Every college student ought to see this as their education. We want to help students establish a habit in voting every election.”

The weeklong initiative kicked off Monday and continues through Friday, September 25, with voter registration drives, guest speakers talking about issues like grassroots organizing, the importance of the youth vote, and voter suppression, and information on how to get involved on Election Day. Events are sponsored by Boston Intercollegiate Government (BIG), BU Student Government, BU Votes, and the Community Service Center (CSC).

Not able to attend? BU students can register to vote through TurboVote, an online platform that keeps track of all 50 states’ rules for voter registration, absentee ballots, and voting by mail; they can also order vote-by-mail ballots at that link. Turbovote will send them reminders when it’s time to vote in their location.

And remember, Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and the deadline to register to vote in Massachusetts is October 24 (deadlines vary from state to state).
