BOSTON — Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke is a man of many hobbies. He’s a talented woodworker who built a 14.5-foot dining room table out of a slab of black walnut.
He also enjoys golf, fishing, hunting and reading. He’s an avid reader who has buries himself in novels when away from the ballpark. Roenicke has turned to books to unplug during a difficult 2020 Red Sox season.
“When I go home, instead of dwelling on this, I jump into a book and I read,” Roenicke said before Wednesday’s game. “I’ve read more this year than I’ve ever read in my life. And I like to read a lot. So it shows you how much I’ve read. I’ve gone through so many books, I can’t tell you. That keeps me sane.”
He doesn’t just stick to one genre of literature.
“I’m all over the map,” Roenicke said. “My favorite author is Vince Flynn.”
Flynn, who died of cancer in 2013, wrote political thrillers. Roenicke also is a fan of the late Louis L’Amour, who wrote Westerns.
“I love Westerns so I’ve read every one of his,” Roenicke said. “He’s got about 110 books. I’ve read every one of his probably two, three times. I love, right now, Nick Petrie.”
Roenicke is able take his mind off what happened that night at the ballpark when he arrives home.
“I can really separate it pretty good now,” Roenicke said. “I think about things while I’m here. I try to talk to either coaches or if I can hunt out some players and get the things done, kind of over with basically in what happened in the ballgame and how we can go about it better the next day. And by the time I get home, and when I open up a book, my mind can go straight to what I’m reading. And then I read for however long I want to. It can be a half an hour. It can be a couple hours. And then lights off and I’m fine. I’m asleep. Sometimes in the morning I wake up thinking about things. I’ve been doing this for so long now that my mind’s easy to turn off and on on what I need to do.”
