BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Send them back or keep them home?
It's a decision that, either way, parents feel pretty passionate about. Rebecca Wentworth knew what she felt comfortable with for her three children in the Bethlehem Area School District.
"I would rather them be home and safe and us continue what we're doing," she said.
So she chose the remote option on the district's website, or so she thought.
"The Friday before school was supposed to start here or last Friday I received notice that they were in this hybrid schedule and pretty much, I don't have a choice with that," Wentworth said.
The assistant to Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy says all parents who responded before the deadline in early August got what they chose. Wentworth says she got her response in on time, but the district says she didn't. Now, Wentworth has to send her kids to school the two days a week or face truancy fines and possibly court. The district confirmed that is a possibility.
"I feel like it's difficult because they're pretty much making me decide over an education for my children or the health of my children," Wentworth said.
And her children aren't the only ones she's worried about. She's concerned the kids could pass it to her mother.
"She went through chemotherapy last year, so we don't want her to get sick," Wentworth said.
Wentworth isn't the only parent in this situation. The superintendent's assistant says there are dozens in her boat now trying to get their children into the remote option, but it's too late. They don't have the staffing to support it. However, they've started a waiting list. In the meantime, Wentworth says she's not taking any chances.
"I'm not sending the kids at all. I'm going to take the truancy fines," Wentworth said.
