Daniel Popper of The Athletic joined me on Monday’s radio show to talk about the NFL debut of Justin Herbert on Sunday.
Listen to the full interview here.
Popper talked about the unexpected start, which was caused after Tyrod Taylor suited up (rib injury) but decided he couldn’t play just before the game. Herbert got the start and threw for 311 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
“Herbert responded in very admirable fashion considering the circumstances,” Popper said. “But you could argue that maybe it was the best circumstance for a rookie to step in and make his first start. He didn’t have all night to think about it. There were no nerves. It was, ‘Here’s the ball, go play.'”
Taylor may continue to start. He’s the safe choice for a coach who values ball control and veteran leadership. But Herbert just made it difficult on Chargers' coach Anthony Lynn, didn’t he?
On Herbert’s assessment:
“He made mistakes. He knows he needs to get better. There are some throws he wants to have back.”
“He can play at this level right now. I wrote that yesterday. I think there were a lot of questions about whether he can get his mental process to reach this level and make quick decisions. He answered that... this guy can play at this level in this league right now."
On the possibility that Herbert gets another start soon:
“If Taylor isn’t ready to play it’s Herbert’s team and he’ll be out there... he made some absolutely breath-taking throws yesterday. We all knew he had the arm talent, but there were a couple of throws where you just say, ‘OK, this kid has got it.’.. he’s going to make this decision difficult."
