Kwity Paye pokes Ohio State’s ‘easy’ schedule, and Urban Meyer agrees - MLive.com

Kwity Paye never mentioned them by name, but took to Twitter Saturday morning after the Big Ten rolled out its eight-game regular-season schedule to remark at how easy one team’s slate appeared.

The Michigan defensive end appeared to be referencing Ohio State, the defending Big Ten champions and league’s most recent College Football Playoff qualifier, though he never specified.

“They gave them boys the easiest schedule,” Paye wrote, a message that drew the attention of Buckeyes fans and the studio hosts on FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff” show.

Among the analysts on set was Urban Meyer, the former Ohio State football coach, who agreed with Paye.

“Yeah, their biggest issue is can the players stay disciplined, not get sick and not get pulled off the field?,” Meyer said. “That’s an easy schedule. I don’t want to put too much pressure on the Buckeyes, but that’s an easy schedule. They have two speed bumps.”

The Big Ten released its revised 2020 regular-season schedule on the show Saturday, with Paye’s Wolverines set to play the same five East division opponents (Penn State, Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland and Rutgers) and Ohio State, with two West crossover games against Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes, No. 2 in the Associated Press' Top 25 preseason poll, were pitted against Nebraska and Illinois — two teams that combined for an 11-14 record in 2019.

“The way you rank schedules to me is: Obviously who you play, where you play and then when you play,” Meyer said. “You look at (Michigan), the Wolverines have the toughest schedule. Then you have Penn State, then you have Ohio State in the East. Those are the contenders in the East.”

Michigan’s 2020 schedule opens with a road game at Minnesota on Oct. 24, followed by a road game at Indiana two weeks later on Nov. 7. The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor for a home game on Nov. 14, but it’s against West favorite Wisconsin.

The back half of Michigan’s schedule includes a home game against Penn State (Nov. 28) and road game at Ohio State (Dec. 12), whose difficult matchups against Penn State, Indiana and Michigan are conveniently spaced weeks apart on its schedule.

“Ohio State’s got six weeks of space,” Meyer said, referencing the difference between the Buckeyes' Oct. 31 road game at Penn State and its marquee matchup against Michigan.

“You look at some of these teams, and I look at Iowa — Iowa’s got a tough road. I know we’re going backwards, but LSU — LSU’s got the hardest schedule I’ve seen because there’s no space. It’s back-to-back-to-back tough teams.”

Brady Quinn, a former quarterback at Notre Dame and FOX analyst, challenged Paye to use Michigan’s difficult schedule to his advantage.

“Because they do have a tough schedule,” Quinn said. “But the bottom line is: Even if they do drop one game, they still might be one of those teams that can make into the College Football Playoff as a one-loss, non champion. Look at it as a challenge, not necessarily a disadvantage.”

It remains unclear how the Big Ten’s nine-game schedule will factor into the decision making of the CFP selection committee. Teams in the Atlantic Coast, Big 12 and Southeastern conferences are scheduled to play up to 10 regular-season games.

Michigan linebacker Cam McGrone chimed in on Twitter less than an hour after Paye’s tweet, writing: “Who cares about a schedule, let’s play ball.”
