The A’s knew the San Diego Padres lineup they were going to face Friday night was going to be tough. That was inevitable. Oakland’s 7-0 loss proved that.
Rookie Jesús Luzardo got the start for the A’s and in 4 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs while striking out four.
“They just had a good approach that third time around,” Luzardo said after the game.
Luzardo was looking fine through four innings until Trent Grisham doubled to score Wil Myers in the top of the fifth.
“It’s definitely difficult when you got [Fernando] Tatís Jr., [Manny] Machado and [Eric] Hosmer, the first three guys in the lineup,” Luzardo said. “It’s obviously a tough lineup to face, but I mean, we’ve faced a lot of good lineups so that’s not an excuse for not pitching well necessarily so, got to find ways to get outs.”
Luzardo wasn’t the only problem.
When newly-acquired pitcher Mike Minor came into the seventh inning for his A's debut, he immediately gave up a solo homer to Tatís Jr. -- his 14th of the season. The Padres went back-to-back when Machado homered off Minor.

The A's hadn’t played since Saturday after a positive COVID-19 test from A’s pitcher Daniel Mengden forced the team to quarantine and postpone the series against the Seattle Mariners. That certainly played a role with the word “rust” being bounced around both before and after the game.
A’s manager Bob Melvin said heading into the game he wouldn’t have been surprised if it wasn’t a successful time at the plate for the A’s. He was right.
