Massachusetts is preparing for its first major snow storm of the COVID-19 era. Gov. Charlie Baker wants anyone not already working from home because of the pandemic to stay home from work or school tomorrow as the storm lashes the northeast into Thursday evening.

"Tomorrow's going to be a difficult day," Baker said. "We haven't seen a day like this around here in a long time."

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency director Samantha Phillips said the state's emergency bunker will open this evening for the duration of the storm.

"We have not had one of these in quite a while. Which means we all probably need to relearn some of the skills we've lost and the discussions we make with respect to how we handle one of these," Baker said.

Baker advised anyone scheduled to receive a COVID-19 test tomorrow to contact the test provider to see if they can accommodate drive-thru testing or to possibly reschedule.

Baker said that as the storm hits in the midst of a surge in the pandemic, the public should stay home to cut down on the need for emergency responses to car accidents or other emergencies.

"If you absolutely don't have to travel tonight or tomorrow, it would be great if you could just stay put and let the road crews do the work that they need to do the right thing," Baker said.
