Enterprise surprises Class 7A No. 6 Fairhope with easy 35-10 victory - AL.com

Enterprise running back Mykel Johnson rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another, and Zy’air Boyd ran for one score and caught a touchdown pass as Enterprise upset Class 7A No. 6 Fairhope, 35-10, on the road in the first round of the Class 7A state football playoffs.

Enterprise led 28-3 at halftime.

Johnson’s first touchdown, a 1-yard score, came on the first possession of the game. Fairhope answered with a Luke Freer field goal. Then, despite four false start penalties, the Wildcats ran 18 plays to respond with an Amare Griffin 5-yard rushing touchdown to make it 14-3.

Enterprise recovered a fumble and, three plays later, Johnson scored his second touchdown, this one on a 60-yard run, to make it 21-3. Later, backed up to their 34 yard line, quarterback Quentin Hayes pitched to Johnson, who then threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Boyd to make it 28-3.

Fairhope quarterback Caden Creel left the game after getting hurt early in the second half. Ian Parish came in to replace him. Fairhope responded on its next drive, as Parish went 5-for-6 for 81 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown pass to Glenn Patrick to make it 28-10 with 18 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats answered in one play -- a 58-yard touchdown run by Boyd to make it 35-10.

Enterprise advances to play Auburn. Fairhope (9-2) has its fifth straight season with a first-round exit.

Star of the game: Johnson had 22 carries for 138 yards, went 1-for-1 for 66 yards passing, with a touchdown pass and an interception.

Play of the game: On Enterprise’s fourth possession, after a holding call backed them up to their own 34, Hayes gave the ball to Johnson, who then threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Boyd, the first of Boyd’s two touchdowns on the night.

Stat sheet: Enterprise - The Wildcats ran 51 plays for 438 yards of offense, 44 on the ground for 313 yards, anchored by Johnson’s 138 and Amare Griffin’s 62. Enterprise was penalized 12 times for 85 yards, 8 false start penalties, two personal fouls, one holding and one encroachment. Hayes went 6-for-7, 47 yards, and overall including Johnson, Enterprise went 7-for-8, with a touchdown pass and one interception.

Fairhope - The Pirates ran 47 plays for 286 yards of offense, 27 carries for 125 and 20 completions for 161 yards. Creel went 4-for-5, 64 yards, along with 9 carries for 30 yards, all in the first half before his replacement, Parish went 7-for-15 for 97 yards and a touchdown pass. Patrick led all rushers with 7 carries for 61 yards. For the game, Fairhope had more first downs, 11-9 and fewer penalties, getting dinged 6 times for 36 yards.
