There are people who relish a leisurely phone call.
I am not one of those people. I'm not averse to calling in a takeout order. I don't mind it. But if I can pore over an online menu, if I can have little comment boxes where I can type out my exact wishes (extra pickles pretty please, and kindly put the mayo on the side), then all the merrier.
These 11 local restaurants, from Fort Myers to Naples, make takeout orders almost too easy. Their online ordering systems rival those of the pros. They offer no-contact curbside pickup. Some include in-house delivery service.
In 2020, those are my kinds of perks.
ASK JLB: I am once again avoiding restaurant dining rooms, here's why
10 Twenty Five
I spent a lovely Sunday morning on the patio of 10 Twenty Five's downtown Fort Myers location 14 years ago (Or was it January? It was January). I sipped a tongue-tingling Bloody Mary topped with a wee-bitty grilled cheese. I ate a burger dripping with the sunny yolk of a fried egg. It was a great day. I tried to replicate that day on my own patio recently. I ordered the burger. I made the Bloody Mary. I chatted up my dog about the weather. It was — sad. But — kind of the same? The happiest part: that burger, and being able to order it online and have it delivered with just a few key strokes.
JLB REVIEW: 10 Twenty Five feels right at home in downtown Fort Myers
(online ordering available from the Cape Coral and downtown Fort Myers restaurants; delivery available within five miles of the Cape store; delivery coming soon to Fort Myers; more at 10twentyfive.net)
3 Pepper Burrito Co.
Founded by a pair of Cape Coral friends, this local chain has grown to nine locations across Southwest Florida. The 3 Pepper difference: Flour tortillas pressed and cooked to order, leaving them silky soft and steamy as they cradle these thickly packed burritos. 3 Pepper's online order form lets you select your location and customize a burrito (or tacos, or quesadilla, or salad) to your specifications. The chain offers curbside pickup and delivery through DoorDash.

Angelina's Ristorante
Eating at Angelina's feels extravagant. Ordering from Angelina's does, too. This is curbside pickup on another level. The restaurant's grand roundabout gives it the air of a luxury hotel. The uniformed (and masked) greeters make you feel welcome from afar, with warm waves and courteous nods. Angelina's online carryout menu includes craft cocktails and everything from hand-made pizzas to pillowy squash ravioli to pan-seared scallops paired with pork belly. Click what you want online, then put on your best pajamas to pick it up. This is an extravagance you get to take home.

Dorona
This online menu had me at Wagyu olives. It kept me with spaghettini carbonara, whipped burrata and a $260 bone-in Chateaubriand, that, while positively insane (and I say that with love), makes for an enticing fantasy. It should be no surprise a restaurant of this caliber has a digital ordering platform to match.
(2110 Tamiami Trail N., Naples; 239-529-2819; doronanaples.com; Dorona's sister restaurants in Naples also offer online ordering and curbside pickup; find more at seasaltnaples.com, barbatellanaples.com, grappinonaples.com)
El Gaucho Inca
When I first ordered from El Gaucho, I was shocked and delighted at how well these Peruvian-Argentinean dishes traveled. My ceviche arrived still chilled, still refreshing. Wisps of steam escaped from my arroz chaufa. My skirt steak was still rosy pink in the middle. Owner Rocio Navarrete and her chef-husband Mariano Maldonado are no slouches. Not in the kitchen, not with their digital ordering platform, and certainly not with the efficient and well-masked servers who bring all this lovely food to the car.

Farmers Market Restaurant
I try to imagine going back to 1952, when this restaurant launched, as a time traveler. How would I explain 2020? Our reality-show president, the global pandemic, the internet. "Yeah, so, the world is falling apart, but this place is still around! We tap our orders into little screens we hold in our hands. Like Captain Kirk in Star Trek! No? Too soon?" I'd try to tell them how the collard greens and ham steaks are still on the menu, how people still love this restaurant. Then I'd hop back into my time machine and see if it could take me to a galaxy far, far away (but, ideally, one that still has a Farmers Market).

Fine Folk Pizza
These award-winning pizzas win awards for a reason: They are so, so good. The hand-tossed chew of the dough, the balance of sauce and cheese, the creative toppings — there's a lot to love. Tack on an easy-to-navigate digital ordering platform, curbside pickup and in-house delivery (to a limited range), and you've got plenty of fine reasons to make it a Fine Folk Pizza night.

Island Pizza
I'll be honest, I haven't been to Island Pizza in years. I can't tell you too much about the place, other than it's on Sanibel and its owner is James Beard-nominated Chef Melissa Donahue. That last part, though, I think that's all you need to know. Donahue's attention to detail is what's made neighboring Sweet Melissa's an island favorite. Island Pizza is more casual, more online friendly and completely ideal for takeout.

Nice Guys
It is — how do I put it? — dangerously irresponsible to make ordering Nice Guys this easy. The Street Corn Named Desire, just a click away?! The Hot Honey pizza, the vegan doughnuts, the corn dogs with black-truffle mustard — all to be had with a tap and a send? How am I supposed to eat anything else? How am I supposed to fit through my front door when this all over? Those are questions for another time. For now: Let's order more Nice Guys.

Turco Taco
Be it an organic hearts of palm salad, some crispy tinga tacos or fire-roasted Mexican-inspired corn speckled with cotija, eating at Turco is delightful — as is Turco Taco's takeout. This digital menu shows you exactly what you're getting, from verdant guacamole to passion-fruit paletas. What it can't do is tell you how those things will taste. That's where I come in; the short answer: delicious.

JLB REVIEW: Turco Taco is exactly what downtown Naples needs
Wally's Deli
Be it the Dad Bod, a hefty sub loaded with pastrami, Swiss and (YES!) french fries, or a Buddha Bowl piled with seasoned chickpeas and a rainbow assortment of vegetables, Wally's gets me. It gets all of me. It gets that I might order both those things for one meal. It does not judge. The beauty of an online ordering system: It cannot judge. It can just process and make and serve, so I can eat my greasy-veggie combo in peace.
