This act of kindness makes it easy to root for Mitch Trubisky - NBC Sports Chicago

The Chicago Bears have a quarterback competition in training camp this summer that has former second overall pick, Mitch Trubisky, squaring off against former Super Bowl winner, Nick Foles. There will be plenty of time to argue who should start and who will give the Bears a better chance to win, but let's step off the field for a moment and recognize why Trubisky makes it easy to root for him.

Check out this incredible act of kindness he displayed for the family of Jack Roche, the former Kansas football equipment manager who was killed in a car accident in July at just 21 years old:

Roche, who according to Trubisky's letter was a big Bears fan and a Trubisky-backer, was beloved by the Kansas football community.

Trubisky is a good guy. He treats the media with respect, he has the support of his teammates in the locker room, and it's pretty obvious that Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy want him to emerge victorious this summer. But even if he never takes another snap as the starter of the Bears, he'll have left a lasting impression in Halas Hall for treating people the right way. And that's bigger than any football game.

The Chicago Bears targeted Nick Foles this offseason for a reason: He knows Matt Nagy's offense, he's familiar with the coaches, and as a result, he'd be ready to start right away (even with COVID-19 impacting the offseason).

During his Zoom call with reporters on Friday, Foles confirmed his comfort level with the Bears' offense.

"I'm going to focus on getting to be myself and when a play is called playing to the best of my ability," Foles said.

Foles comes to Chicago after a less-than-ideal season in Jacksonville after the Jaguars signed him to a substantial four-year, $88 million deal. He was injured in Week 1 and ultimately lost his starting job to sixth-round sensation, Gardner Minshew.

But all of that is ancient history now. He's been given a fresh start with the Bears and will battle Mitch Trubisky for the starting job this summer. And while Trubisky is the favorite in the locker room and likely the preferred choice of Ryan Pace, if Foles plays like the guy who led the Eagles on a miraculous Super Bowl run in 2017, it won't take long for him to become QB1.

Foles, who's gone 26-22 as a starter, has a career completion percentage of 61.9% with 71 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.

Mitch Trubisky is a motivated quarterback entering the 2020 season. And he better be. He's fighting for his starting job with veteran Nick Foles and if he loses, his run as an NFL starter could be over (anywhere.)

Trubisky held a Zoom call with reporters on Friday and said he's fired up for his make-or-break year.

"I'm just trying to prove everybody wrong," Trubisky said. "And my teammates right."

Trubisky's regression in 2019 was obvious to anyone who watched the games. He finished the year with 3,138 yards, 17 TDs and 10 INTs in 15 starts in a year that was supposed to be his Level 202 season under Matt Nagy.

There's no doubt he possesses the kind of physical tools to emerge as a viable long-term starter in the league, but his inconsistent play through three seasons in the NFL has him at a career crossroads.

So, yeah, it's time for Trubisky to prove everybody wrong. It's now or never.
