WAYNE, NJ – Mayor Chris Vergano was happy to announce the new construction going on in Wayne during this week’s Wayne Town Council meeting.

“I want to talk a little bit about the construction that's going on in the Township,” said Mayor Chris Vergano. “I'm pleased to announce that construction of the long-awaited Wayne Hills Mall started yesterday.”

Vergano said that people have asked him for months what has taken so long to get the construction started. He joked that the delay might have been due to Jimmy Hoffa. “Was Jimmy Hoffa buried under the Wayne Hills Mall?” he asked rhetorically. “I don’t believe so. I think it was more of the construction people getting their act together and being ready to start the project.”

“So, If you drive by the Wayne Hills mall now you will see people lined up to go into Burlington Coat Factory, which is open, and you'll see construction which includes the new ShopRite and various other assorted stores,” he said.

The Mayor mentioned the new Bank of America branch that is being built on Hamburg Turnpike and Church Lane and the new strip mall further east down Hamburg Turnpike. “It includes the new Trader Joe's, and yes we can finally say it since it's no longer a secret: Trader Joe's is moving there,” he said, adding that the new strip mall will be open as early as September.

Lastly, Vergano talked about the eventual opening of Whole Foods on Valley Road. “For those of you that have said over the years that Whole Foods was not coming, I hope you will join me there when we buy our Halloween candy,” he said. “Yes, there is light at the end of the tunne. The signs are up, all the work is taking place inside.”

The explanation for the delay given by Vergano was that Whole Foods is owned by Amazon. “They have a business plan and they only open ‘x’ amount of stores per year.  In their mind, they are right on track.  So I will be announcing, hopefully soon, the date that the store will open. But, I think we’ll all be buying our Halloween candy there, in order to give you a hint.”

Vergano made a few additional announcements during the meeting.

The bad news is that Wayne Day will be canceled. “We had tried moving it to September,” said Vergano. “But we just don't believe it will be feasible to conduct in September, so unfortunately we're going to have to cancel it for the year.”

The good news is that the James Roe Pool and Tom’s Lake are open.  Vergano was particularly proud of the new swim lanes installed at Tome’s Lake. “Another accomplishment that we achieved this year is the swim lanes at Tom Lake,” he said. “If you haven't had the opportunity and you want to go swim laps, it's outstanding.”

His last announcement was the continuation of the Wayne Summer Concert Series with the Kootz playing next Wednesday night at 7:00pm on the lawn in front of the Wayne municipal complex. Live music will happen every Wednesday night through August 12.
