Dozens remember Angelo Easy Miller shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer 13 years ago - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dozens of people gathered at East 79th Street and Hough Avenue Saturday afternoon to remember Angelo Easy Miller who was shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer March 22, 2007, more than 13 years ago.

Many came with signs stating “Justice for Angelo Miller,” “Angelo Easy Miller, Remember in Power,” “Say their names: Angelo Miller + Tamir Rice.”

Family, friends, advocates and community members are pushing for Miller’s case to be re-opened after she was shot and killed by Cleveland Police Patrolman John Lundy.

Alicia Kirkman, mother of Miller, said she is paying a private investigator to take a look at Miller’s case in hopes that it will be re-opened and reviewed.

“Because 13 years ago, DOJ never looked at the case and just did a settlement without even investigating the case,” Kirkman said. “So I have a petition going to get this started.”

Kirkman described her son as funny and loving and even at the age of 17, always gave her a kiss without getting embarrassed.

“I won’t rest until I get justice. I’ve been fighting for 13 years and I’m going to continue to fight until the police officer is charged for the death of Angelo,” she said.

Prosecutors determined Lundy was protecting himself when he shot 17-year-old Miller, who was trying to hit Lundy with a car.

At the time Miller had two auto theft cases pending when he was killed. Car stereos were in the back seat of the car at the time he was shot and killed.

Lundy fired eight shots at Miller in self-defense after the boy tried to hit him with his car, then-Cleveland Chief Assistant Prosecutor Victor Perez determined in his review of the case.

His family later filed a lawsuit claiming Lundy “recklessly and deliberately” shot Lundy, who was unarmed, as he drove away from the officer who suspected him of stealing car radios.

The city paid Miller’s family $35,000 in 2010 to settle the lawsuit after Perez ruled Lundy acted lawfully in the shooting.
