If you are looking for a top team in college football in 2020 and a national title contender, you need to go no further than Columbus, Ohio. There, Ohio State has built an impressive group led by head coach Ryan Day that looks to capture its fourth straight Big Ten title and return to the College Football Playoff for a second year running.
Those are the expectations for the Buckeyes.
"Just the expectations, first off, that you set for the whole program and that you have for yourself," Day said in early March. "And our program is all built on fighting and competing every single day to be the best version of yourself, the best version of your unit, the best version of your team. We know what the expectations are here. That's part of this thing. When you wake up every day you know what it is. And we're hungry. We felt like we got a good foundation set underneath us this past season."
The return of Heisman Trophy finalist Justin Fields at quarterback and targets like Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson make meeting expectations easier. Fields has good protection in front of him with three returning starters on the offensive line. The defense, while talented, has fewer experienced pieces back but is expected to develop quickly.
With that said, Ohio State has a number of players to replace in 2020 and how the Buckeyes do that will determine if the team achieves its goals. While some spots are easier to fill than others, there are some holes that leave bigger gaps and are more difficult to plug.
