BERLIN, Md. – As many on the Lower Eastern Shore know – oysters aren’t just a menu item. They also help to maintain water quality and build ecosystems. “Oysters are important regardless of where you are – whatever county you’re in. They have importance to ecology. They filter the water and provide what’s called live bottom,” said Director of the Shellfish Division for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Chris Judy.

The Maryland Coastal Bays Program is helping people to begin their very own oyster gardens. Science Coordinator Dr. Roman Jesien says that it’s pretty simple – and almost anyone can do it. “It doesn’t take a lot of time. Just go shake the cage and you’re off again to do whatever you need to do,” said Dr. Jesien.

The MCBP says they’re hoping to see people start oyster gardens – and boost the area’s underwater ecosystems. “The more oysters you have, the more filtering capacity you have in the watershed. Oysters filter a lot of materials through their system,” said Dr. Jesien.

Judy says oysters don’t just filter water. “Oysters filter. that’s important. but probably more important is the live bottom and that rich ecology they provide,” said Judy.

That live bottom habitat helps provide a home for other kinds of organisms to thrive under the water. Dr. Jesien says that when oysters form that live bottom habitat – it begins a cycle of life. “Oyster shells are really good in that it provides everything that they need as far as a hard substrate. If there’s previous oysters there, this must be a good place,” said Dr. Jesien.

Judy says that before you begin your oyster garden – you should contact the DNR to find out what regulations you might have to follow. “It’s important to talk to the DNR and see if there’s any permits that are necessary,” said Judy.

Dr. Jesien says that some local families are selling oyster cages and oysters to people wanting to start oyster gardens. But you can get a cage and oysters from the MCBP for free. To contact the DNR about regulations, you can give them a call at (877) 620-8367.
