Tuesday?
Friday?
Next week?
The start of training camp?
The time and date increasingly feel inconsequential. All that matters is that Patrick Mahomes got paid. Which means that at some point in the near future, the Texans' franchise quarterback will reap almost the same.
Technically, Mahomes' contract extension is ridiculous. He didn't start his first year. He's only been in the NFL for three. He missed two games last season and suffered a knee injury. He's only made 31 pro starts and won't turn 25 until September.
Officially, Mahomes' $450 million extension and potential $503 million bonanza with bonuses makes perfect football sense. Kansas City locks up its franchise QB/Super Bowl winner/Super Bowl MVP through 2031. The best quarterback in the NFL theoretically never has to worry about anything again.
Heck, if this keeps up, Mahomes will be able to buy the Chiefs in 2040.
Mahomes was always going to set the market for Watson. The only question was whether Kansas City or the Texans would strike first. Now that the Chiefs have handed out the largest contract in American pro sports, it's time for the Texans to step up.
What if Watson plays hardball?
What if D4 insists on a short-term deal and stays away from the promise of megamillions promised through 2031?
Then, this could get interesting. Right now, it's all a formality.
The Texans have always said they plan to pay Watson. The soon-to-be best QB in franchise history has consistently backed his team and head coach/general manager in public. Annoying or frustrating Watson right now would immediately become the dumbest front-office move in Texans history (and there have already been a few).
Mahomes has been the better QB thus far, so the financial bar has already been set. Watson has also already dealt with a season-ending injury in the NFL, so the promise of megamillions through the end of this decade should be appealing.
This is a deal that will immediately change the Texans' short- and long-term futures. It's expected to easily be the largest deal in franchise history. Contractually, the organization will have stability at the QB position like it's never had before.
How much? For how long? A 10-year extension for $400 million? A three-year extension in the $120 million range? Those are the only Qs that remain.
Mahomes and the Chiefs did the Texans a favor by going first. Now all the reigning AFC South champs have to do is fill in the big numbers for D4. And win a Super Bowl with their franchise QB.
