NEW YORK — Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier hasn’t been shy about his preference to wear a face mask on the field. He wants to keep himself and his teammates safe from the coronavirus. He wants to promote the right image.
“All the while, it’s been important for (Frazier) to have the mask, or he has the gaiter on during the game,” manager Aaron Boone said after Frazier clubbed a two-run home run in Saturday’s 9-3 exhibition game win over the Mets at Citi Field. “Obviously, it’s not affecting him.”
Well, we were able to learn a little bit about Frazier’s mask, and it sure seems comfortable. Here’s what you should know:
- Frazier has been wearing FOCO’s New York Yankees Stars and Stripes Gaiter Scarf, which costs $15 and can be purchased on its website. As of Saturday night, however, it was sold out.
- The company says the polyester scarf will “keep your neck covered with lightweight, breathable material.”
- FOCO describes it as “soft” and “durable.” It says it’s seamless, adjustable, reusable and one size fits most. The company adds that it could be used as a neck gaiter, wristband, headband or a ponytail holder.
- It comes with a message of caution, though: Don’t confused it with an N-95 or any other kind of surgical mask meant for doctors or nurses. “It is not intended to be personal protective equipment and should not be used by healthcare professionals or used in a healthcare/clinical environment or setting,” the website says. “The Fashion Gaiter Scarf is not intended to prevent or protect from any form of illness or disease (or otherwise).”
Still, face masks should be worn to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“Cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice,” according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. “This is called source control. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth.”
