If Shakur Stevenson's junior lightweight debut on Saturday was any indication, the former WBO featherweight champion appears poised for big things in his new division. Stevenson (15-0, 8 KOs) was nearly flawless in pitching a shutout of durable veteran Toka Khan Clary (28-3, 19 KOs) in the main event of a Top Rank card at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
Considered among the best young stars poised to take over the sport, the 23-year-old Stevenson put on a clinic in hitting without getting hit. Not only did he outland Clary by a margin of 151 to 48, according to CompuBox, he limited the 28-year-old Clary to just 9% of his total punches landed.
"You had an experienced fighter who knew how to survive," Stevenson said. "He has experience and I have known him for a long time in the amateurs. He knew how to survive and that's what he did."
Stevenson showed a crisp jab and steady work to the body to slow down Clary over time, but was never able to put his opponent in any legitimate trouble. He briefly wobbled Clary in the opening round with a stiff left hand but couldn't take him off his feet.
Clary's offense was largely limited to jabs to the body as Stevenson's speed and counter combinations proved too much.
A former U.S. Olympic silver medalist from Newark, New Jersey, Stevenson set his sights on the champions at 130 pounds after the fight including WBO champion Jamel Herring and WBC belt holder Miguel Berchelt.
"I want the WBO belt first," Stevenson said. "The winner out of [Carl] Frampton and Jamel have to come see me and then we want Berchelt."
