DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday the United States will have enough COVID-19 vaccine supply for every adult in the country by the end of May. This goal is two months earlier than the July date previously set by the White House because of a third vaccine.
“We should all be encouraged by this news of a third safe and highly effective Covid-19 vaccine. The more people who get vaccinated, the faster we’re going to overcome this virus,” Pres. Biden said.
But right now, vaccine demand is high and supply remains low in some areas causing frustrations trying to get a vaccine appointment. Harriett Griffin and her husband are in their 70s and have been trying to get a vaccine time slot since January.
“I have tried every place,” Griffin said, ”I’m not the only one. I know there’s so many out there that have not been able to get through. I have some capabilities of using my phone and internet, where other people don’t have that.”
She called the process to get signed up frustrating and said she wishes there was an easier way for people to get signed up, especially for those who aren’t tech savvy.
“Our neighbors right next to us that are in our eighties just go their first vaccine, but she said she stayed on the phone constantly calling because she said she doesn’t do internet either,” she said.
According to Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, as of Tuesday Iowa ranked 23 in vaccines distributed to the state that have been administered to the public at 81.5 percent. Illinois ranked 24 at 81.3 percent.
Neighboring states Wisconsin and Minnesota fell third and fourth respectively. North Dakota leads the country at 96.8 percent.
For people like Griffin who continue to wait, she keeps trying.
“I just keep trying every time. Go through all the gamut. I try to go through it at least once a week,” she said, “That’s all we can do right now.”
Pres. Biden also announced a goal to get all educators, school staff, and childcare workers at least one shot by the end of this month. He said the use of the Federal Pharmacy Program will begin next week to assist in making that happen.
