The Spartans scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and rolled to a 38-20 victory over Eau Claire North on Friday night at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
After postponing their fall season to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spartans were in midseason form for their opener.
“The coaches said we were waiting almost 500 days, so this was the best thing ever getting back out here and playing again,” senior running back Carter Fonger said. “It was a perfect night for playing football.”

Senior quarterback Kaden Kimmes was 11-for-17 passing for 218 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ben Hunter for the team’s fifth consecutive touchdown in the first half.
Fonger had scoring runs of 9 and 11 yards as Superior cruised to a 38-6 halftime lead.
“Our O-line blocked well, defense played well and we were catching the ball well, so we were clicking on all cylinders,” Kimmes said.
Most of all, players and coaches were just glad to be out on the gridiron again.
“It was very emotional,” said Spartans coach Bob DeMeyer, who is in his 15th season at the helm. “I was excited for the kids. They have been waiting and working for a long time and doing everything they can. They deserved to be out here tonight.”
The Spartans need only four plays to go 65 yards after the opening kickoff. Kimmes found Jake Edwards on a 34-yard pass and Fonger finished the drive with a run around left end.
Their next possession was just as efficient with Ross Rivord closing the nine-play drive with a 16-yard scoring run around the same left side.
“We clicked and got rolling and nobody could stop us,” Fonger said. “We’ve been focusing really hard in practice on the mental part of it, staying focused and being ready. Everyone executed and I’m really proud of the team.”
After the Huskies scored their lone first-half touchdown, Jordan Goldfine ended a 10-play march with a 3-yard dive. He added the two-point conversion for a 21-6 lead early in the second quarter.
Two more quick Superior touchdowns — one set up by a Hunter interception and the other ending with his acrobatic reception in the end zone on a fly route — made it 35-6.
“The execution was pretty good,” DeMeyer said. “We had some glitches and hiccups, but we have some leaders and experienced kids who came back from a really good 2019 season. They have been really dialed in and focused in practice.”
Kimmes is one of those. He was injured that season when Superior went 10-3 and reached the state semifinals, but has bided his time and looked sharp right out of the gate.
“He’s a very composed kid and a great athlete,” DeMeyer said. “He understands our offense and has a high football IQ. He has a lot of skills.”
Kimmes said all the preparation has paid off.
“We’re just happy to be out here and that our season wasn’t canceled. We’re grateful that we get to play some games,” he said. “It sucked to watch other teams play in the fall, but we were on the field all the time and getting better.
“We only have so many practices and games left so we’re putting it all on the line.”
Fonger said players would have preferred to play during the fall, but are just pleased to be hitting players other than teammates.
“We were disappointed; we wanted to play our Big Rivers opponents,” he said. “But we’ll play anybody we can. As long as we have a football season, it’s all good.”
