North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has suggested that the country must brace itself for an "Arduous March," apparently a reference to the challenges posed by sanctions and the coronavirus pandemic.
State-run Korean Central Television on Friday reported on a conference that came to a close on Thursday. The report included details of a speech Kim delivered to wrap up the gathering, which brought together 10,000 officials of the ruling Workers' Party.
He said he had decided that an "Arduous March" even more difficult than similar challenges in the past would be required to bring the maximum happiness and benefit to the people.
North Korean authorities used the term "Arduous March" in the latter half of the 1990s when large numbers of people died of hunger amid severe food shortages. The slogan was aimed at bolstering the population's determination to overcome these difficulties.
Observers say that by referring to past difficulties and the effort to overcome them, Kim aims to strengthen his grip over his regime.
