What’s Popular Now
Once homeowners have made these bigger picture decisions, they can move on to refining their office spaces.
“Since we’re inside more, you want to think about the next layer of how to be healthy and happy in built environments,” Ms. Morris said.
The home office features most in demand now, designers say, are geared not only toward facilitating productivity, but also to health and wellness. This can mean ergonomically designed furniture, like desks that can be adjusted for standing and sitting, and chairs with lumbar support, as well as decor that promotes a sense of mental well-being.
“We’ve been doing custom elongated desks, or desks facing each other so that two people can each have their own workspace,” Mr. Berkowitz said. “We’re putting in comfortable seating areas, too, with overstuffed chairs, ottomans and loveseats, so people can come in and hang out more often during the day.”
Creating a less formal, more comfortable work space reinvigorates clients who have been spending so much time indoors, he added. One major upside to working from home is the ability to create a far more personalized and calming space than one would find in an office building.
“We try to make spaces a little more Zen-like and create a sense of peace—you don’t have that opportunity in a corporate setting,” Mr. Berkowitz said. “People want plants, candles, desktop fountains to keep the stress down.”
Homeowners are configuring offices not only for themselves, but also for the colleagues who have a view of their homes during video meetings. People are organizing their spaces for the most flattering lighting—through both ring lights and natural light from windows—since they’ll be appearing on camera. Also in high demand are attractive backdrops and furnishings that might also appear on screen. Minimizing clutter is key, so many clients are seeking out unobtrusive storage options.
One of Mr. Roth’s clients is managing all this by designing two offices: one will remain a private workspace and the other will be for work meetings.
“She’ll have a cozy space for reading and phone calls, and then an everyday space for Zoom calls,” he said. “We’re putting more effort and resources into it, with a new wall-to-wall custom cabinet in an amazing blue color as a backdrop. There’s a desk with three monitors and lighting for Zoom, nice carpeting, a comfortable sitting chair.”
