Remember to check the current CDC guidelines for domestic travel, wear a mask and practice social distancing if you’ll be traveling anytime soon.
Need a break from the hustle and bustle? Spend the day hiking or cycling in a refreshing natural setting, getting some retail therapy or learning about U.S. history, all within a 30-minute drive of Downtown Washington, D.C.
Alexandria, Virginia: Old Town and Mount Vernon
Strolling the historic district in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, just 20 minutes south of Washington, D.C., takes you to another place in time, with more than 140 sites connected to George Washington alone—his former estate at Mount Vernon is located just 20 minutes away, runs tours of the mansion and grounds and offers a look at the lives of those who were enslaved there.
While some Old Town Alexandria museums and attractions are temporarily closed or have special hours due to the pandemic, there are still plenty of places to go to brunch, enjoy a day of shopping or learn all about the city’s American Revolutionary War history. The Alexandria Black History Museum is closed for now but is holding virtual events and worth visiting when it reopens.
How to get there: Drive 20 minutes south from Downtown D.C. or hop on the Metro’s yellow line for about 30 minutes to King Street. Note that the free King Street Trolley is closed until further notice so you’ll need to walk the last 20 minutes or take a local bus. Water taxi service is also available from The Wharf in Washington, D.C. and National Harbor in Maryland. You can also take a river cruise down the Potomac from The Wharf to Mount Vernon.
National Harbor in Maryland
Whether you’re in the mood for some much-needed retail therapy or want to indulge in some wining and dining by the waterfront, National Harbor in Maryland has something for everyone. Try your luck at the MGM National Harbor Casino or enjoy views of Washington D.C. from the Capital Wheel, a 180-foot tall Ferris wheel sporting 42 climate-controlled gondolas. Tanger Outlets National Harbor is home to major retail brands like Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Loft, H&M, Express and Coach, among other shops, letting you save some major money on your summer wardrobe.
How to get there: National Harbor is about a 20-minute drive from Washington, D.C., or a 10-minute drive from Alexandria, Virginia, while Tanger Outlets National Harbor is another five minutes away. For a fun day of sightseeing along the Potomac River, take a water taxi from The Wharf in Washington, D.C. or Alexandria in Virginia.
Great Falls National Park in Virginia
Roughly 30 minutes northwest of Washington, D.C. in Virginia is Great Falls National Park, a fun place to enjoy the outdoors, whether you’re looking for cycling and hiking trails or the chance to try whitewater canoeing or kayaking, birding, climbing or fishing—with a valid Virginia or Maryland fishing license, which you can buy at a local fishing, sporting goods or hardware store. Best of all, the three waterfall view points are within a short 10-minute walk of the Visitor Center. Note that the National Park Service may close the main entrance if the parking lot reaches capacity, so visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially on weekends, to avoid disappointment.
How to get there: There is no easy way to get here other than by car so consider going with a traditional car rental company or renting through a car-sharing app like Free2Move or ZipCar if you only need it for a few hours.
