How Easy is Getting Medical Marijuana in Shreveport? - News Radio 710 KEEL

I (Rueben Wright of 710 KEEL) recently was able to get my medical marijuana prescription in Louisiana. I have to say, the process is easy and user friendly for those looking to break away from traditional pharmaceutical treatments for things such as pain, anxiety, and PTSD.

My process began just like any other. With a Google search. I went to the browser and typed simply, "How to get medical marijuana in Shreveport LA" and several options popped up. After looking through some of the apps and websites, looking at reviews of each one, I was able to land on one that worked for me.

I was asked to fill out some medical history, about the conditions that need treatment, and some basic personal information, all of which was done on a website through my phone. It took less than 20 minutes to get through filling out the info, then I was told within the hour I'd be getting a call from a doctor.

A doctor who specializes in medical marijuana called me from New Orleans to ask a few questions about specifically what needed to be treated. The conversation took less than 10 minutes after which a call was put in by the doctor to one of our local medical marijuana pharmacies.

Less than 24 hours after I was signed up and approved by a doctor, I was called by the local pharmacy. After a short and friendly consultation, my first prescription was ready to be picked up at the pharmacy. The pharmacy process was nearly identical to a regular pharmacy experience. I walked in, was greeted, asked for my name and ID, charged (cash only), and was given my 100% legal and medical marijuana product (a THC liquid tincture).

Overview:

The process was a little pricey. With signing up for medical, the doctor consultation and prescription itself, you're looking at spending close to $350.00. Granted, that isn't pricey for everyone, but it put a bit of a dent in my wallet. After the initial sign-up process it's $200.00 a year to keep your prescription active, which is less than a Netflix Premium account.

There are now a wide range of conditions that will qualify you for the medical marijuana program, including:

  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Chronic Pain
  • Communication difficulties or avoidance that jeopardizes the patient’s physical health
  • Destructive or physically aggressive behaviors
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Repetitive or self-stimulatory behaviors that put the patient’s physical health at risk
  • Seizure Disorders
  • Self-Injuring Behaviors
  • Severe Muscle Spasms
  • Spasticity
  • Wasting Syndrome/Cachexia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Migranes

Those conditions as well as some others will qualify you.

The raw smokable form of marijuana is not yet available to Louisiana medical users, but a bill has recently passed that will allow for the raw form to be used in the future.

All-in-all the process was an easy one, and gives me great hope for the future of Louisiana medical marijuana patients.
