With double-digit winning streaks on the line, it’ll be the Super Sophomore versus the Dallas area’s best 1-2 senior punch on Tuesday night in District 7-6A.

Lake Highlands (23-2), the fourth-ranked Dallas-area 6A team in The Dallas Morning News’ rankings, will host top-ranked Richardson (21-1) at 7 p.m. Lake Highlands has won 12 games in a row while Richardson has won 10. Both teams are 5-0 in league play.

If Lake Highlands hopes to have a chance against ESPN’s third-ranked team in the country, sophomore Tre Johnson will need to continue his stellar play. A five-star recruit with offers from defending national champion Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State, Johnson is averaging 22 points per game on the season. Since district play began, Johnson has ramped his scoring up to 28.2 per game.

But Richardson has played its best in big games this season, with wins over Compass Prep (Ariz.), then ranked first in the country by ESPN, and Duncanville, the second-ranked 6A team in The News’ rankings and the fifth-ranked team in the country.

The senior duo of Cason Wallace, a five-star recruit signed with Kentucky, and Rylan Griffen, a four-star recruit signed with Alabama, have staked their claim as the best backcourt in the nation. Both are McDonald’s All American Game nominees, and combined to score 47 points in Richardson’s win over Compass Prep.

“We’re almost unstoppable,” Wallace said of he and Griffen.

Lake Highlands will put that to the test.

Top scorers face off

Elsewhere in 6A, the area’s two leading scorers — McKinney’s Ja’Kobe Walter and Denton Guyer’s KyeRon Lindsay — will duel Tuesday night.

Walter, a five-star recruit per ESPN, has scored more total points than any Dallas-area player (623) for an average of 23.9. The junior holds offers from defending national champion Baylor, Alabama and Texas.

“He’s never going to back down, he’s going to compete really hard on both ends of the floor,” McKinney coach Wes Watson said of Walter in November. “When he gets going, he’s pretty hard to deal with. He’s pretty hard to stop.”

Lindsay, a four-star UNLV signee, isn’t far behind Walter with 598 points (also averaging 23.9 per game) and 11.7 rebounds per game.

Third-ranked McKinney (23-3, 4-1 District 5-6A) and fourth-ranked Guyer (22-3, 4-0 District 5-6A) play Tuesday in Denton with the top spot in the league on the line.

Madison has left no doubt

Madison (20-6, 4-0 District 9-3A) is the top team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ 3A rankings, and have shown why since district play began.

The four-time state champions are 3-0 in district play since the calendar turned over, and have won those games by an average of 62.2 points.

It beat Grandview 88-32 on Jan. 4, Keene 106-35 on Jan. 7 and Life Oak Cliff 93-32 on Friday. It plays Maypearl (15-9, 4-1 District 9-3A) on Tuesday.
