TEMPE, Ariz. — Welcome to Sun Devil Stadium, Shaun Aguano. This is your new life.
Just more than an hour before Saturday night’s home game against No. 13 Utah, the Arizona State interim head coach stood on Frank Kush Field. Most of his team and staff were still in the locker room.
Aguano took in his surroundings. He went through situations. “If it’s fourth-and-1 here, do I go for it?” He looked in the crowd. He felt blessed. A week ago, Aguano was the running backs coach on Herm Edwards’ staff. Since then, there’s been a promotion — and a program rebranding.
With Edwards out, Aguano brought a new approach. “Ohana” — Hawaiian for “family,” a nod to Aguano’s upbringing in the islands — replaced “Words and Actions” as the program motto. The Sun Devil Walk, a pregame ritual, was brought back. Even the coach’s weekly radio show switched names from “All Aboard” to “Maroon Monsoon.”
Aguano, 51, walked over and greeted recruits. Recruiting won’t be easy for an interim coach, but Aguano already had declared the 48th state as his personal hunting ground. The previous night, he had visited Chandler High, where he once won four state championships in eight years as head coach. How big an impact did Aguano make there? As the Wolves took the field to face Scottsdale Saguaro, “Ohana,” flashed on the scoreboard.
At Sun Devil Stadium, Aguano grabbed a football and threw 10-yard passes to three boys. He walked to midfield and talked with Shawn Slocum. The special teams coordinator joined the Arizona State program in 2015.
