The 'Drew Barrymore Show' host's longtime friend weighed in on her battle with addiction.
Cameron Diaz opened up about supporting longtime friend Drew Barrymore while the latter struggled with alcoholism.
In a Los Angeles Times profile on Barrymore, the Never Been Kissed star opened up about her previous struggles with addiction, particularly her alcohol dependency. She revealed that after her divorce from Will Kopelman, she began drinking excessively to cope with her depression.
Diaz said that watching Barrymore's condition worsen was "difficult to watch."
"But I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way," Diaz noted. "I have absolute faith in her. You can’t even comprehend how hard it was to be her as a child, and then she shot out the other end with the ability to save herself."
Additionally, Barrymore opened up about Barry Michels, a celebrity psychotherapist who'd worked with her for a decade, dropping her as a patient.

"He just said, 'I can’t do this anymore,'" recalled the actress. "It was really about my drinking. I said, 'I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.'"
After two years, Barrymore reconnected with the therapist, who took her back.
She shared that she's since given up alcohol, but doesn't use a program like Alcoholics Anonymous to maintain abstinence from drinking. Without alcohol, she said, she doesn't "stay stuck."
The talk show host also gave an update on her career, explaining why she took a hiatus from acting to focus solely on The Drew Barrymore Show.
"I just need to be myself. I struggle to be someone else," she explained. She disclosed that there are certain opportunities that would bring her immediately back to the big screen, like being asked by friend Adam Sandler to appear in another one of his movies.
Nonetheless, she doesn't truly have any interest to return to acting for the time being.
"I just can’t see acting right now. I know that sounds sad and dismissive, and I hate when people are like, 'I’m retiring,' or 'This is my goodbye.' I don’t want it to come off that way," Barrymore concluded.
