Snow, wind and ice will make travel difficult tonight - KEYC

simpanta.blogspot.com

Strong wind and blowing snow continue to create travel problems across much of southwestern Minnesota tonight. No travel is advised across much of southwestern Minnesota where whiteout blizzard conditions have been reported. The worst conditions are west of Mankato where heavier snow fell. In Mankato, the warm air stuck around long enough to keep most of the precipitation in the form of rain. That said, the temperature drop has made roads very slippery and there is still some light snow and blowing snow impacting visibility in rural areas around Mankato. Light snow will continue to fall through tonight with little additional accumulation expected. While snow will eventually stop falling, strong northwesterly wind gusts of 40 to 50+ mph will continue through tonight and much of Friday creating areas of blowing and drifting snow. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa through tonight.

This system will be followed by a blast of bitterly cold, Arctic air that will keep temperatures well below average through the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, morning temps will drop into the single digits with highs only reaching the upper teens to low 20s on Saturday afternoon.

We will bounce back quickly as warmer air moves in by early next week. Highs will climb into the low 40s Monday with mid to upper 40s possible by Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We are keeping an eye on yet another system that has the potential to bring rain and possibly a little snow by mid to late next week.
