Ole Miss basketball cruises to easy win over visiting Vanderbilt - Clarion Ledger

OXFORD — The Ole Miss men's basketball team proved Saturday that it definitely belongs a tier above the bottom of the SEC.

Ole Miss improved to 14-15 on the season and 5-11 in SEC play on Saturday with an easy 86-60 over last-place Vanderbilt. Five Ole Miss players finished with double-digit points and the Rebels' 26 assists were the most in any game in coach Kermit Davis' two-year tenure in Oxford.

"The biggest stat for me is we had 26 assists on 35 baskets," Davis said. "The ball really, really moved. It was [the most complete offensive game of the year]."

Ole Miss' 86 points are tied for the most the Rebels have scored in any game this season, matching the mark the Rebels scored against Memphis on Nov. 23.

As a team, Ole Miss shot 54.7% from the floor. This marked just the third time that Ole Miss shot better than 50% for a game in SEC play this season. The Rebels' 37 rebounds were also the second-most they've brought in any game this season.

Ole Miss broke out to a hot start Saturday, taking a 13-1 lead within the first four minutes of the game. Vanderbilt closed the gap by making four-straight 3-pointers, but the Rebels responded with sharp shooting. The Rebels shot 54.8% from the floor in the first half with 11 assists on 17 made baskets to take a 43-27 lead into halftime.

Forwards Khadim Sy and Sammy Hunter led a formidable Ole Miss frontcourt in the first half. Sy scored 12 points and snagged five rebounds in the first half, while Hunter logged three blocked shots in just five minutes on the court.

"Tonight what we did was it was the most blocks that we've had," Davis said. "We're last in the league in blocks. When you can go change shots like these guys did, it just helps the back end of your defense. I thought Khadim changed some, Sammy changed some. It just helps you get in transition."

"I'm just trying to find what coach wants me to do," Sy said. "In practice he's been telling me to be more physical around the rim, finish with contact, gather myself, shoot the ball with balance. That's all I was paying attention to these last couple weeks."

Ole Miss returns to action on Wednesday for its final home game of the 2019-20 season against Missouri. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.
