San Jose’s Severe Housing Shortage Is Easy to Fathom - Wall Street Journal
While it’s true that the tech boom over the past 50 years in Santa Clara County has increased demand for housing by creating lots of great new jobs, the constraint on supply—which is why there’s a crisis—is 100% due to local governments’ restrictive zoning and overzealous regulatory schemes (“San Jose Pursues Tech Giant, Carefully,” Page One, Jan. 29). Simply put, local government has made it virtually impossible to build new housing, causing prices to soar. Blaming demand for supply’s failure is upside down.
