UW-Madison doctor says COVID-19 vaccine won't be easy - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- One of the fewer than 20 doctors who will be making federal vaccine recommendations is in Madison, and he said it won't be easy.

The lab is like a second home to University of Wisconsin Medical School Associate Dean Jonathan Temte, who has decades of experience developing vaccines for viruses.

He told WKOW's Milwaukee affiliate WISN he's never seen anything like COVID-19.

"This is a new kid on the block, but this one I have much more fear about just because of the nuances and the extent to which it causes havoc in people," Temte said.

He's concerned about raising false expectations because most vaccines take 10 to 15 years to develop.

"Even with a rush, 18 months could be very optimistic. At the same time, we're hopeful that in the meantime more and more effective treatments come along," Temte said.

In studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Temte has researched other coronaviruses in the same subgroup as the one that causes COVID-19, and troublingly, he said, people don't develop immunity to those.

"This is a virus that we just don't understand fully. The virus, and the response of the person that has the virus, it's really confusing," Temte said.

But, with the worldwide focus on a vaccine, Temte said he is "optimistically hopeful."

"Some of the technology is very, very deep. And we just hope that with all these options, one of them is a home run," he said.
