HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Now more than two weeks after the first of two devastating ice storms in southwestern West Virginia and the full restoration work continues.

Appalachian Power on Saturday reported 3,257 outages remaining across the region, and nearly 2,000 of those were in hard hit Wayne County.

The company had initially projected complete restoration by Friday night, but the work continued into the weekend.

Damage, particularly in Wayne County, was catastrophic during the storms and was complicated by a followup snow storm and cold front. Line crews from across the nation have been in West Virginia assassinating with the repairs from the start. During the restoration effort they have literally experienced every kind of weather West Virginia can offer.

The last of the outages, according to the company, are those at isolated homes in extremely rural areas.

At the height of the storm the outages topped 97,000 across a six county region. A state of emergency declared by Governor Jim Justice remains in effect.
