Difficult driving conditions are being reported across much of central and southern Minnesota on Sunday morning, as snow continues to fall across the region.

As of 10 a.m. a band of heavy snow was moving across the Twin Cities, after earlier dropping more than a half-foot of snow in central Minnesota.

Snowfall reports as of 10 a.m. included 8.5 inches near St. Augusta, south of St. Cloud, and 7.5 inches from spotters near Willmar and Kimball.

Other reports relayed by the National Weather Service included:

  • 7 inches - Atwater

  • 6.5 inches - Paynesville

  • 6 inches - Clearwater

  • 5 inches - Milaca

  • 4 inches - Buffalo, Sauk Rapids, St. Joseph, Albany

  • 3.2 inches - Dawson, Dassel, Maple Lake, Montevideo

  • 3 inches - Pipestone, Danube

  • 2.8 inches - Redwood Falls, Benson

  • 2 inches - Lake Lillian, Melrose, Finlayson, Mora

Those are not necessarily final snow totals — and they don’t include observations from the Twin Cities where snow started later in the morning.

Total snowfall in the metro area is expected to be in the 1 to 3 inch range, with some higher totals to the north.

MnDOT is reporting snow-covered roads from Pipestone, Worthington and Fairmont north and east to St. Cloud, the Twin Cities and Duluth. The agency had advised no travel in the Willmar and Litchfield areas earlier Sunday morning.

Find updated road condition information on MnDOT’s 511 site.

Authorities are responding to a number of crashes and spinouts in the Twin Cities and near St. Cloud.

Winter storm warnings remain in effect until noon from Mora and Cambridge east to St. Croix Falls. Winter weather advisories remain in effect until 11 a.m. for Mankato, New Ulm, Owatonna, Fairmont and Blue Earth, and until noon for the Twin Cities. Find more details on MPR Weather's Updraft blog.
