Journaling is more than recording words in a book. The process of journaling offers a variety of health benefits such as reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, relieving stress, improving your working memory and helping you reach goals.
Journaling can help people shift from a negative mindset to a more positive one, according to the website PositivePsycology.com. People of all ages can benefit from journaling.
“Journaling is not exclusively for girls, tweens and teens — it’s for anyone that can write,” the website reported. “It is a form of self-expression that can life and empower people to understand their complex feelings.”
The process of journaling differs for each person. While some people like to record their thoughts and goals in a blank journal, others need more help and opt for a journal with writing prompts.
Finding the right journal is a very personal thing and with so many different options on the market, it can seem overwhelming.
That’s how Kelly Friesen felt when she looked around for a journal that would fit her style and needs.
“I was always seeking out self-help books and journals and they always seemed kind of overwhelming,” Friesen explained. “I’d buy these expensive journals and there would be all these parts that I didn’t have any interest in doing. I wouldn’t use the journal because I felt like I didn’t want to do all that.”
Deciding to design her own journal, Friesen started compiling things she learned over the past 15 years being a busy mom, wife and full-time employee.
“I took all the things that I had learned as a busy mom and struggling and what helped me and I put it into a journal,” she said. “I want to help other people, especially women. Trying to change is hard, it takes a lot of energy.”
“My Life by Design — A Guide to Help Create and Maintain Life Changing Momentum” is the result of Friesen’s compilation of those tips and tricks.
Friesen designed the journal to help keep people accountable for their actions and goals.
The beginning of the journal has an area to help with goal setting, explaining how SMART goals — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely— can help you succeed in your ambitions.
“The journal has different tools to hold you accountable. I have some 30-day challenges,” Friesen said. “I kind of see these parts in the journal as putting the chip in the cup and checking things off as you make progress.”
Friesen’s journal includes a variety of helpful features such as habit trackers, daily intentions/goals, an area where you can record thoughts of gratitude and reflections from the day, and weekly to-do lists.
Throughout the 579 pages in the book, Friesen added sections to help expand on goals and manifest positive thoughts such as pages on how to create a vision board, connecting with someone you’ve lost touch with, tips on how to overcome fear and coloring pages to inspire a person’s creative side.
“Throughout the journal, every couple of weeks there is a ‘give it a try’ section where you can try something new,” Friesen said. “You can skip those if you want and not feel like you’ve skipped half the journal and wasted money.”
One of the great things about the journal is that it can be started at any time of the year since the days are number 1 to 365 rather than listing the days by each month.
“It’s things that are easy. It’s not going to take you 15-minutes — it could if you wanted it to— but it doesn’t have to,” Friesen said.
“My Life by Design” sells for $27 online at Amazon.
“The idea that someone could benefit from the journal is rewarding,” Friesen said. “It’s not about the money; it’s about helping people.”
Friesen was born and raised in Kremmling and works full time in the juvenile justice system. She and her husband, Matt Friesen, have six daughters. In her free time, Friesen enjoys coaching high school volleyball, teaching yoga and mediation, and is a Reiki practitioner and life coach.
