CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- If you are looking to help local families in need this upcoming holiday season, Chagrin Falls police are seeking donations for their annual Shop with a Cop program. Funded entirely by donations, police and staff will take kids in need shopping for food, clothing and gifts on Saturday, Dec. 4.

During this time, participants, volunteers and officers will adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Donations in cash or check form can be made any time prior to Dec. 4. Checks should be made payable to the John Murtaugh Benevolent Fund, with “Shop with a Cop” designated in the note section.

Donations can be dropped off at the police station, 21 W. Washington St. Checks also can be mailed to Chagrin Falls Police Department, 21 W. Washington St., Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44022. Contact chagrinfallspd.com.

Wrap up holiday social skills: If your child could use some tips to make the holiday season more fun ad less overwhelming and confusing, Connecting for Kids is offering a virtual class at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 led by Ellen Spear, of Lakeshore Speech Therapy.

Designed to help navigate the many social situations, hidden rules and potential problems related to the holidays, the class includes discussions on how to make conversation with relatives and friends, tips for handling holiday parties and appropriate ways to give and receive gifts.

Speaking of holidays: How can you talk about your LGBTQ+ child to family and friends you have not seen in a while? Learn to navigate questions about your child’s gender identity while being supportive and affirming, with Kristen and Lisa Pepera of Colors+ at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18.

The virtual program starts with a short presentation on gender nonconformity, followed by a discussion on ways to be prepared for difficult conversations while being an advocate for your child.

Building partnerships for families: Dealing with health and education issues can be difficult for any family, but it may be tougher for Black families. Connecting for Kids is offering a two-day virtual workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, and Tuesday, Nov. 23, designed for parents and caregivers of children up to age 12.

Led by Nikki Montgomery, it covers what it takes to be a good advocate and how to gather a team of allies when working with educators, therapists and healthcare providers.

Rock-climbing Shabbat: Temple Emanu El’s preschool and religious school will host “Reach Up to Shabbat,” an event from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, for families with children up to age 6 at Shaker Rocks, a rock-climbing gym.

An instructor will guide the process, with parents actively involved. Masks are required for adults and school-age children, and social distancing will be observed.

The program is offered free of charge and is open to the public. The venue is at 3377 Warrensville Center Road in the Van Aken shopping district in Shaker Heights. RSVP by Nov. 11 to Eileen Sadowsky at esadowsky@teeclev.org.

VAC juried art show: The 50th annual Valley Art Center Juried Art Show kicks off with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (Nov. 5) on location at 155 Bell St. in Chagrin Falls.

The show, featuring the work of fine artists throughout the region, will be on display through Wednesday, Dec. 15. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday though Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Masks are required in the hallways, in the gallery and in some classroom situations. They are also strongly recommended throughout the building. See the website for the latest guidelines.

Fall II session classes begin this week and run through Dec. 18 at the VAC. Included are offerings in drawing, painting in watercolor, acrylics and oils, clay, jewelry and a variety of children’s classes. Contact valleyartcenter.org or 440-247-7507.

See your name in stone: Or, consider an engraved paver brick as a lasting gift for the theater lover on your holiday list. For a donation starting at $75, Chagrin Valley Little Theatre offers engraved brick pavers with names and short messages installed on the walkway in front of the theater at 40 River St.
