Passing the football was an issue for the Steelers in previous seasons. Diontae Johnson is someone that the team will look at for leadership. His 1,161 yards receiving, and eight touchdowns led Pittsburgh in both categories. Chase Claypool and rookie Pat Freiermuth followed behind Johnson in the team’s statistics.
Moving the ball downfield will be an issue for the Steelers this season. Pittsburgh’s decision to part ways with fifth-year receiver Juju Smith Schuster will force other players to make big plays in 2022.
Chase Claypool could be the guy to fulfill Smith Schuster’s role. Pittsburgh’s third-year receiver averaged 14.6 yards per reception during the 2021 season. Glimpses of Claypool s abilities on display during the 2020 NFL season. His 873 yards receiving that season helped the Steelers fight for a late playoff berth.
Relying on veteran receivers will be the key for Pittsburgh’s developing offense this season. As the NFL draft approaches, analysts and experts believe that the Steelers will acquire a young gunslinger who will be the face of the franchise for years to come.
If Pittsburgh wants their future quarterback to have success for the season to come, the teams receiving core must be ready to lead the charge this season.
