It’s hard to imagine a more uncertain macroeconomic environment. The world is still reeling from a global pandemic that continues to impact our physical and mental health. New studies show over a third of people who had coronavirus reported symptoms lasting 12 weeks.
Top it off with a major war in Europe creating multiple global crises: energy prices spiralling out of control, supply chain disruption, a global recession, the threat of nuclear warfare and living through some of the worst climate extremes and natural disasters the world has seen so far.
Hiring is also often a challenge: 75% of companies report talent shortages and difficulty in hiring. Although large companies are struggling more than micro firms with recruiting and retaining startups.
The 2020s have brought truly turbulent times. For startup founders who are already in the throngs of spinning 10 different plates, wearing 20 different hats, forging a path to market, innovating, finding investors and seeking the route to profitability – grappling with all this while leading a team through an incredibly difficult macroeconomic environment can be exhausting.
So how can sustainability leaders centre themselves amid the chaos, stress, the struggle and the challenge?
Startups are having to pivot frequently while keeping an upbeat and organised working environment.
According to The Harvard Business Review, managing and training the mind is the crux of maintaining positive and effective leadership in challenging times.
Three strategies for managing the mind include:
Keeping ego in check – as leaders grow, the ego can naturally become inflated. This narrows the vision and can lessen our ability to be agile as we look for information that confirms our preconceived ideas. Leaders need the freedom to admit mistakes, learn and be wrong about things.
Choose courage - feel the fear and do it anyway
It takes continuously summoning courage to push through comfort zones and keep moving forward in the face of uncertainty.
Practice being both caring and transparent
Level the playing by being open and honest and not withholding information over fear of how it will be received. Leading compassionately improves job satisfaction, organisational commitment and reduces burnout.
And above all, maintain a dual focus within your team on both performance and health; it’s the only way to make performance sustainable and maintain a competitive advantage over the long-term.
