With the end of the year only a few weeks away, film industry magazines and outlets are already looking back at the year that was and talking about the film that ‘saved moviegoing’ – “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Along with being the fifth-highest-grossing domestic release of all time and one of the best-reviewed major studio films of the past decade, the film is tipped to be a potential awards contender along with being a cultural phenomenon.
The Wrap spoke with the film’s director Joseph Kosinski about the production’s challenges, and he revealed the most difficult single sequence to film had nothing to do with the meticulously planned aerial scenes.
Rather it was the scene when Penny (Jennifer Connelly) takes Maverick out on her boat, a scene they ended up shooting three separate times in order to get the version that was in the movie:
“That sequence was in some ways the hardest to get because it was largely out of our control. We’re relying on wind to make the sequence great, and we had to go find wind.”
The plane sequences were more predictable thanks to a “marathon of planning” with more than a year of prep and thousands of storyboards. He says one of the big reasons the audience warmed to it is because they appreciate the hard work put in:
“I think the audience feels that effort when they see the film. That’s why I think people respond to it, because it wasn’t shot on stage. It was a movie where we went out there and tried to capture as much as we could for real. And you can feel that when you’re watching it.”
He recently said that the most he’s heard someone watch the film in a cinema is twelve times. “Top Gun: Maverick” closed out its theatrical run with $1.487 billion in box-office and the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.
