ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second straight night, sophomore forward Dylan Duke potted a pair of goals in a losing effort for a shorthanded group of Wolverines, as the No. 3 ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell 6-3 to No. 2 Minnesota on Friday night (Nov. 18) inside Yost Ice Arena.

Five U-M skaters missed the contest due to an illness that has been impacting the program. In addition, forward Eric Ciccolini missed action after suffering an injury during Thursday night's 5-2 loss from a hit that turned into a Golden Gopher suspension.

Junior netminder Erik Portillo made 27 saves, including several of the highlight-reel variety.

Michigan (9-5-0, 2-5 Big Ten) came out of the gates with a flurry of energy as it debuted its maize uniforms, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a long-range strike from the left circle at 10:47 to make it 1-0.

The Gophers doubled their lead when a pair of Minnesota forwards got behind the U-M defense to deposit a back-door, give-and-go goal with 7:17 left.

Despite leading 15-7 in shots on goal, the Wolverines trailed by two after the first period.

Minnesota's first power play of the game came early in the middle frame, and they converted to extend their lead to 3-0 at 4:37.

Shortly after the Golden Gopher tally, Michigan embarked on its second power play of the night but failed to capitalize with the extra skater before the teams returned to 5-on-5 play.

With 6:31 left in the second stanza, Duke went hard to the blue paint as the Wolverines set up in the Minnesota zone. Posted up at the corner of the crease, Duke patiently waited for the puck to find him near the left post when he forced it across the goal line to earn his third goal of the weekend. Mark Estapa and Seamus Casey assisted on the goal that got U-M on the scoreboard and made it 3-1.

The visitors notched their fourth goal after their goaltender left his net for a delayed penalty on Michigan. With the extra skater on the ice, Minnesota (10-4-0, 6-2 Big Ten) buried a loose puck in the crease to extend the lead to 4-1 before starting another power play.

Just after the Gopher advantage expired, Rutger McGroarty collected the puck and dashed down the ice as time wound down. The freshman forward crossed the blue line and unleashed a hard shot from the left flank that beat the Minnesota netminder up high. The officials called it a goal on the ice, but after video review, it was determined that the shot crossed the line after the final buzzer had sounded.

With 20 minutes left in the series, U-M trailed 4-1 but held a 26-23 edge in shots on goal.

The early part of the final period saw back-and-forth play without either side netting a goal. Once again, it was Duke putting on a show for the Wolverine faithful by scoring his fourth goal of the weekend. After entering the weekend without ever recording a multi-goal game in his time at Michigan, Duke accomplished the feat in back-to-back games with yet another goal from the netfront area on a rebound. Luke Hughes and Estapa earned assists on Duke's second of the night.

Halfway through its third power play of the evening, Minnesota struck with the man-advantage to extend its lead to 5-2.

Before the goal was announced, the Wolverines answered back with a marker of their own. This time, it was Mackie Samoskevich extending his team-lead in goals to 11 with a snipe from above the circles that cut the deficit to 5-3 with 8:53 left in regulation. The two defenders, Ethan Edwards and Casey, assisted on Samoskevich's first of the weekend. With the helper, freshman blueliner Casey secured his second straight multi-point game.

As Portillo watched from the bench and the team threatened with an extra skater, Minnesota sent a free puck all the way down the ice and into the Michigan net to ice the contest with an empty-net goal that nudged the final score to 6-3.

Next week, the Wolverines invite undefeated Harvard to Yost Ice Arena for a two-game non-conference series on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 25-26) following the Thanksgiving holiday. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m. and the will be streamed live on B1G+.
