About 125 dolphins were found stranded in a muddy area off Cape Cod during low tide on Friday, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Ten have died, the group said.
The welfare group worked to help the dolphins back to sea after they became stranded near Great Island on the Herring River in Wellfleet around 11:20 a.m., said Stacey Hedman, IFAW’s director of communications.
“The plan, given the number, is to triage and aim to support animals, refloat, and herd as many as possible” to deeper water, Hedman said by email. She said the next high tide was shortly before 5 p.m.
Hedman said 25 staff members and 100 volunteers were helping the Atlantic white-sided dolphins. Ten died before crews arrived in what Hedman called the “largest single mass-stranding event in IFAW’s response history over 25 years.”
Rescue crews waded into the mud and shallow waters to help the dolphins out to sea.
“We currently have three small vessels in the water to continue herding and using underwater pingers (noise) to urge the dolphins in the right direction,” Hedman said.
There is “no set reason for why these dolphins strand,” she said.
“Cape Cod is a global stranding hotspot due to the curvature of our shores and the fluctuation of our tides,” Hedman said.
The group was assisted by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the Center for Coastal Studies, AmeriCorps of Cape Cod, the New England Aquarium, and the Wellfleet harbormaster, she said.
