100 dolphins stranded off Cape Cod in 'very difficult location'
Approximately 100 dolphins became stranded around low tide on Friday in a difficult, muddy location off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, according to police and an animal rescue organization.A Wellfleet resident called police to report the stranded dolphins at approximately 10 a.m., while the tide was going out.The International Fund for Animal Welfare confirmed its team was responding to assist Atlantic White-sided dolphins stuck at The Gut or Great Island in Wellfleet, at the Herring River. A spokesperson for the organization described the area as "a very difficult location with dangerous mud." "The plan, given the number, is to triage and aim to support animals, refloat, and herd as many as possible. Luckily, it is cooler today, but these animals will risk sunburn and overheating until the tide rises, and then we have the challenge of herding them into deeper water," IFAW said in a statement. "Our team has had the greatest success in herding Whitesided dolphins, so that is promising."Sky5 flew overhead and saw the dolphins, many of whom were covered with towels while members of the rescue team worked. Some were stuck in shallow water. Others were in sandy mud. Low tide in Wellfleet Friday was at 11:32 a.m. The next high tide will be 5:34 p.m.
