The Cleveland Browns 2020 schedule was revealed Thursday, and their season opener will be a major challenge that will also be a big opportunity.
The Cleveland Browns 2020 schedule was revealed on Thursday with few surprises. The fan base was disappointed to not see a Thanksgiving game on the docket, as well as being disappointed with only two prime time games. But after their poor season in 2019, the lack of big-time games was not surprising.
One of the biggest matchups revealed from the Browns schedule was their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on the road. Immediately after the schedule reveal, the Browns opened as major underdogs to the defending AFC North champions.
The Browns could not have been given a bigger challenge for their season opener than against the Ravens. Not only do the Ravens have the reigning league MVP in Lamar Jackson, but they are a well-coached team who will be prepared for the season despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, the Browns are coming in with a new staff and new schemes on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Instead of being able to install the new schemes at the team's facility in Berea, Ohio, Kevin Stefanski and his coaching staff are relying on technology to install Cleveland's playbooks remotely.
One year after showing up unprepared to the season opener against the Tennessee Titans, the new Browns coaching staff is going to have to work at a rapid pace when the team will be able to come together at the team facility in order to make sure they are ready for the regular season.
Every team will be challenged because of the COVID-19 pandemic since their offseason programs will be limited. However, the situation benefits teams with veteran and established coaching staffs to help make sure their roster is ready for the season. Instead of having a bunch of changeover in terms of philosophy and schemes, veteran coaching staffs will be able to focus on the fine details of getting their team ready for the season.
This will be right in the wheelhouse for John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens tailored an offense around Jackson and provided him with weapons to make it difficult for defenses to prepare for their offensive attack. Even if Jackson struggles, the Ravens have a solid stable of running backs to take the pressure off the young quarterback. Baltimore also loaded their defense with talent at all three levels.
Although Cleveland is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball, they will be hoping the entire unit has a firm grasp of the offense Week 1. The team will be rushed to build chemistry and familiarity with the offense before the season, so there is a better chance of the offense making mistakes. On the defensive side of the ball, there are some major questions about a unit that has seen a bunch of changeover in the offseason.
Cleveland has gone 1-19-1 in the season opener since the franchise returned in 1999, including losing 14 of their last 15 games since their only win in 2004, which coincidentally came against the Ravens. The odds are against the Browns in 2020 to break that streak.
Browns most winnable games in 2020
It will be a major challenge for the Browns to win this year's season opener, but it will be an opportunity for the team to make an early statement in 2020. If the Browns are able to defeat one of the favorites to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LV in the season opener despite the challenges heading into the season, it could provide the Browns with plenty of momentum for the season.
