The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Family and Community Health unit’s Texas Military Program will host “Keep Calm and Carry On: Working with Difficult Clients” webinar on May 20.

The webinar will be from 10-11 a.m. and is free and open to the public. To RSVP and guarantee a spot, join the session in advance and then check email for instructions.

For those who need continuing education credits, they are offered for social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, case managers and board-certified patient advocates.

“When we work with people, we will inevitably meet a difficult or challenging person,” said Rachel Brauner, AgriLife Extension program specialist in College Station. “Even though it is natural for individuals going through adversity to become difficult/challenging, it is imperative to meet the person’s emotional state with compassion and empathy.”

Brauner said this webinar will focus on strategies for working with difficult clients including techniques of de-escalation, communications and expressions to help understand and address people who are problematic. Attendees will learn verbal and non-verbal communication skills for de-escalation; how to differentiate between sympathy and empathy in response to difficult people; and skills to reconnect with a person after a disruptive moment.

The presenter will be Jeffrey Hanna, Ph.D., from the School of Social Work at West Virginia University.  Hanna has worked in clinical behavioral health for adolescents, adults and geriatrics. For the past eight years, he ran a successful private practice, was part of the National Association of Social Work ethics committee and presented on understanding the impact of masculine stigma on clinical practice.

This material Hanna will present in the webinar is based upon work supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Office of Military Family Readiness Policy, U.S. Department of Defense under Award Numbers 2015-48770-24 and 2019-48770-30366.
