Kristen Wiig revealed her IVF journey was ‘the most difficult time of my life’ before the birth of her twins via surrogacy.
The 46-year-old actress said she ‘wasn’t herself’ for a few years as she opened up about the emotional and physical stress she and fiance Avi Rothman went through.
‘We’ve been together for about five years, and three of them were spent in an [in vitro fertilization] haze,’ Kristen – who now has nine-month-old twins – said.
‘Emotionally, spiritually and medically, it was probably the most difficult time in my life. I wasn’t myself.

‘There are so many emotions that go with it — you’re always waiting by the phone and getting test results, and it was just bad news after bad news.’

The Wonder Woman 1984 star eventually ‘stopped talking about it’ as it would upset her when people asked about it, and said it gave her a ‘lot of stress and heartache’.
‘It was just part of my life. I gave myself [hormone] shots in aeroplane bathrooms and at restaurants — and those shots are no joke,’ she added to InStyle.
The star admitted she initially wasn’t open to having another woman carry her child, but finally realised she ‘just needed help.’
The Bridesmaid actress welcomed twins with fiancé Avi earlier this year and hinted at motherhood during a Saturday Night Live monologue.
During a special At Home episode for Mother’s Day in the US two months ago, when she thanked her mother Laurie Johnston for ‘preparing me to be a mom myself’.
Meanwhile, Kristen and actor Avi were first seen together back in 2016 when they packed on the PDA during a trip to Hawaii, but have kept their relationship relatively out of the spotlight.
It was confirmed in August 2019 that the pair were engaged.
Avi is a writer, actor, producer and director, and has some common ground with his wife-to-be, as they both trained at the iconic Groundlings theatre in Los Angeles.
The September issue of InStyle is available on newsstands, on Amazon, and for digital download on August 21.
