OXNARD, Calif. — It’s been a difficult few months for Brad Sham.

The long-time voice of the Dallas Cowboys dealt with the unexpected loss of his ex-wife and faced his own health scare. Sham prefers not to share the details publicly, but does want to assure everyone he’s doing better and is on the mend.

This came to light near the end of the opening press conference when Tad Carper, the club’s senior vice president for communications, alluded to what Sham had been through and said how happy the club was to have him here in Southern California.

“I very much appreciate the concern of the club and everyone else,” Sham said. “Tad said I’d had a difficult offseason. That’s true.

“The sudden death of my ex-wife Peggy and being there to help my son through that has been compounded by some health issues I’ve been working on since January. Nothing that will keep me from doing the job for which I have such passion, or from living my life.

“The real truth is that millions of people deal with much, much worse every day. I’m very much looking forward to many more years with my family and the friends who mean so much to me and to keep telling the stories of the people who make up this franchise."

Sham, who turns 74 next month, has been with the Cowboys since 1976. He’ll be in the booth to call the team’s first preseason game against Jacksonville on August 12.

Oh, and one other thing.

“I’d like to see people get off the Rangers’ backs, the Cubs keep Cody Bellinger and Missouri to make a bowl game,” Sham said.
