When Jamie Oliver’s chain of Italian restaurants collapsed into administration in 2019, the chef could barely bring himself to talk about it.
When he did, his signature happy-go-lucky exterior faded as he held back the tears while describing the overnight failure of the remaining 22 branches of his Jamie’s Italian chain.
“The past few months have been the most disappointing of my life,” Oliver said later that year in his first interview after the shutters came down. “When it was all going wrong it felt like a colander — the business was full of holes and there was nothing we could do to plug them.”
