Marin Voice: Examples of leadership are easy to find in these difficult times - Marin Independent Journal

There are numerous examples of extraordinary people going to extraordinary lengths in service to others during these perilous times of the coronavirus shelter-in-place order.

The leadership of many Marinites could not be more exemplary. Today, I want to write about Tom Peters, Hunter Moore, Ellie Mednick and Rich Jensen.

Marin County could not be more blessed than to have a trained doctor of public health like Peters at the helm of the Marin Community Foundation.

Formerly head of the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the 1980s, he oversaw a billion-dollar budget and 6,000 employees. Peters steered the city through the AIDS epidemic.

In 1991 he was named to lead Marin’s Health and Human Services Department, which in 1998 led to his appointment as chief executive officer of the foundation. What better experience than to be able to quickly size up, recognize and take action to confront the COVID-19 crisis.

MCF and the Buck Family Fund accessed $1.5 million dollars in emergency grants and matching funds to go to relevant nonprofits in support of those in immediate need.

Prior to being named CEO of Marin’s Redwoods retirement community in Mill Valley, Moore had a stellar background heading up Sunrise Senior Living in McLean, Virginia, Retirement Centers of the United Church of Christ in Hagerstown, Maryland, and Howell Associates in Washington, D.C., leading strategic planning and new development operations.

Upon first announcement  of the COVID-19 outbreak, Moore set in place a number of protocols limiting visitors to only those visiting in end-of-life situations; changing locks on all buildings; screening all staff and other members; performing enhanced cleaning and disinfectant efforts in all common areas; educating all on hand washing and social distancing; suspending all resident programs while planning on how to best reintroduce small-scale classes and events; suspending all communal dining; screening all visitors for symptoms and recent travel.

As of this printing, thanks in part to Moore and his team’s proactive leadership, not one resident on premises has been infected with COVID-19.

With Mednick’s 40-year background in performing arts administration, including development director positions with both the Marin Symphony and the Marin Theater Company, no one was better suited to become executive director of the Lark Theater.

Under Mednick’s leadership, not only has the theater become one of the most successful single screen operations in the Bay Area, but a model for sustaining entertainment venues of all kinds. To wit, she is continually called upon to advise and counsel other operations.

The theater was already scheduled to be shut down for three weeks for renovation when the social-distancing edict came down. Mednick immediately went to work outlining duties and responsibilities to keep her entire staff working on meaningful long term projects and used this opportunity to employ strategies to keep the Lark donor base informed and solidified.

Jenson is a former executive at Bank of America who devotes his time as a business management coach for Marin Link. He also serves as president of the Rotary Club of Central Marin. It is a small club of fewer that 2O members and meets weekly on Mondays in the back room of the Left Bank Restaurant.

Jensen knows how much the fellowship means to the mostly retired seniors who depend on the weekly gathering to socialize, hear good speakers and plan service opportunities. Rather than shut it down during the outbreak, he has found a way to livestream the meetings on the internet.

There are no doubt other stories similar to these. Please email me at noahgriffinlifeforce@gmail.com.
