New York University has designed a simple face shield that’s cheap and easy to produce for hospital workers in desperate need of supplies, the school announced this week.
Academics from NYU’s Tandon Future Labs created the prototype with just two pieces of flexible clear plastic and an elastic band — making the shield, which covers the entire face, in mere minutes using scissors and an office hole punch, NYU said.
The shields can also be made using “almost any flat-material fabrication equipment” including laser cutters, rule dies and drag knives, the school explained when releasing an open source design of the device, which is available to anyone who can help.
The desperately needed gear will bring “added protection to hospital workers and extend the life of face masks,” the school wrote on its Web site.
Academics and entrepreneurs across the country have been making face shields for hospital workers as they grapple with a nationwide shortage but many of them require 3D printers, which can take up to an hour to make just one shield, Tech Crunch reported.
The school is working with various Big Apple agencies and a “network of manufacturers” to scale production and meet demand, NYU said.
