Just add a ribbon
As Sienna Miller demonstrates, a simple ribbon–secured in a small bow–can make a messy ponytail look entirely intentional. Perfect for when the hair isn't its cleanest, this style will buy you an extra day between washes.
Equally, a bow securing the end of a simple plait can add some elegance a la Emily Ratajkowski. Note how the model has some gently tonged sections left out at the front, framing her face. If you have the capacity to do this, it will make the style instantly more polished.
Lucy Boynton's bun has effortless cool girl credentials. Thankfully, the imperfect finish is key to this, and no one need know how it looks from the back. For a similar finish, leave some strands loose at the front, coming from a centre parting.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is queen of the bun – and this half-up version of her signature style is a super-easy way to wear your hair that nods to a professional look. Simply section it off precisely using a tail comb and sleek it into a tight bun with some hairspray for shine around the hairline.
A high-impact headband
A headband or scarf will add instant impact to any up-do, however sophisticated. Granted, Eva Mendes's beehive might not be the easiest up-do to recreate, but adopt her accessory technique to transform your French twist or backcombed bun.
Side or centre-parted from the front – a low ponytail is a hairstyle classic. Make like Jennifer Aniston and let yours peep over your shoulder if long enough.
The low bun
Jennifer Lawrence's low bun oozes a soft elegance. To recreate it, backcomb your hair slightly for body before tying it back, and leave face-framing tendrils loose at the front to further soften the finish.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw's style here is somewhere between a messy bun and topknot, positioned exactly at the crown of her head. To achieve this shape, tie your hair into a ponytail first, then pin sections of looped hair back on themselves, into a bun. Leave flyaways out for a wispy, whimsical finish.
The fashion knot
To reference Kendall Jenner's style here, practice that half-finished pony you experimented with in high school, by leaving the tail looped into it creating a knot at the top.
Simple side plait
To update your side-swept down-do, simply thread the lengths into a braid. The looser the better, as Elizabeth Olsen demonstrates, and pull out some strands on the opposite side for a further effortless feel.
Although this was surely tong-styled, Ashley Benson's waves look similar to those achieved when you sleep in braids. To make yours more polished, copy her and tie a third of your hair back into a mini up-do.
If you're battling with a growing out fringe channel Gwen Stefani's style here and pin yours back at an angle, with the rest of your hair in a loose topknot. Instantly your hair will look 'done'.
If you're blessed with big hair, a jumbo bun makes for easy glamour. Go high with yours, so it can be seen on screen, and smooth with the finish around the hairline.
The messy pony
If your air-dried waves didn't quite go as planned, they'll make for a beautiful messy ponytail. Take style notes from Barbara Palvin, and loosen your pony once secured, by teasing it out slightly at the crown and by loosening some side strands in front of your ears.
The sleek bun
For the minimalists, try this chic hairstyle seen on Hailey Bieber. Super-sleek at the front, and messy at the back, it's achievable for all with long hair.
